September 11 is R U OK? Day, a national reminder to trust your instincts if someone you care about seems to be struggling. It’s about starting a simple but powerful conversation to let them know they are not alone, and encouraging them to seek the support they need.

At Care Fertility, we deeply understand the emotional journey that infertility and fertility treatments can take you on. While often seen as an invisible struggle, the reality is that one in six couples in Australia experience difficulties conceiving and turn to fertility treatment. If this is your journey, you are not alone.
Infertility can bring feelings of sadness, grief, isolation, and disappointment. Each negative test or month without answers can feel like another layer of loss, adding to emotions like desperation, anger, exhaustion, or depression. Many people describe feeling completely alone in their struggles, especially when others around them don’t fully understand, or make comments such as “It will happen when it’s meant to” can deepen the sense of isolation.
Fertility treatments can be equally demanding, bringing physical symptoms, emotional ups and downs, and ongoing stress. Medications, blood tests, scans, and procedures often dominate daily life, while the world outside continues on as normal. Each cycle can bring hope, but also the potential for disappointment, with couples balancing not only their emotions but also the time, cost, and toll on wellbeing.
We’ve all heard comments like “Just relax - it will happen!” or “Don’t think about it”. While often said with good intentions, infertility is a deeply personal and complex experience. Unless you’ve lived it, it’s difficult to know what to say - and many people experiencing infertility feel silenced by stigma. Unlike other mental health challenges that are more openly acknowledged, infertility is often carried quietly, yet it can be completely consuming.
If you’re reading this and want to support someone you care about, here are some gentle ways to approach it:
DO
Choose a quiet, private moment to ask how they’re going, free from distractions or interruptions.
Use open ended, supportive questions like: “How are you coping at the moment?” or “Do you feel like talking about it?”.
Listen without judgement or interruption. Most of the time, people don’t need solutions - they just need to be heard and validated.
Respect their privacy if they’re not ready to share. Let them know you’re there when they are.
Keep the conversation going - check back in a few weeks later to check in, offering a safe, judgement free zone.
DON’T
Offer oversimplified advice such as “Just relax” or “Everything happens for a reason.”
Compare your experiences to others you know such as “My friend did IVF and…”
Share your personal perspective or stories unless directly asked.
Assume you know the full picture of what they are going through.
Reaching out for support during infertility can feel overwhelming, but it can make the journey less isolating. Counsellors and Psychologists who specialise in fertility can provide a safe space to work through emotions, grief, and uncertainty, and can also support couples in communicating and caring for one another. At Care Fertility, we can connect you with experienced counselors who understand this unique journey.
For some, connecting with peer groups or online communities is a powerful way to feel less alone - sharing experiences with others going through the same challenges can be deeply comforting. On a personal level, choosing a few trusted friends or family members to lean on can also help carry the emotional load.
Equally important is taking care of yourself. The physical and mental demands of infertility can be exhausting, so give yourself permission to rest. Small, consistent acts of self-care, whether mindfulness, gentle movement, creative outlets, or setting boundaries around triggering events or conversations, can support resilience and wellbeing.
R U OK? Day is a powerful call to action, but these conversations shouldn’t be confined to just one day. Checking in, offering compassion, and holding space for difficult feelings are ongoing ways we can all support each other. Infertility and fertility treatment are deeply personal experiences that can leave people feeling unseen, but no one should have to walk this journey alone.

We're specialists in optimising natural fertility and providing the latest IVF treatments.
